The morning walk to Rainbow Falls was nice and cool and shaded. The afternoon trip back was another story: hot and very little shade. I was thankful for the water and Gatorade I brought.

on the trail to Rainbow Falls. There is very little shade on this trail, so bring lots of water and sunscreen! A hat would be a good idea too.

Yosemite National Park - Pika - 7/2013

cr_Pika (2), originally uploaded by kimberzy.

I had never seen a pika before until this trip to Tuolumne Meadows. I spotted a marmot near Ellery Lake and pulled my car over to try to get a pic of him. He ran across the road to where I was parked, and ran down the hill. I got out of the car to find him, and then heard a loud "chirp" sound. When I looked in the direction of the "chirp," I spotted this pika sitting on a rock. I snapped a couple of pics of him, and then left. So exciting!
