It is a typical foggy summer day in Morro Bay.

Morro Bay - Sea Otters - 6/24/13
This mama sea otter has 2 babies. She is playing "Superman" with one of them :)
Spotted Towhee - 6/23/13
I spotted this Spotted Towhee (pun intended) along the Valencia Peak trail in Montana de Oro State Park. Looks like he caught himself some lunch.
Acorn Woodpecker - 6/24/13
Acorn Woodpeckers are quite the characters. They have a call that sounds like a laugh. Wacka wacka wacka.
Brandt's Cormorant - 6/24/13
A Brandt's Cormorant attempts to dry itself off on the rocks in Morro Bay.
Snowy Egrets - 6/24/13
A couple of juvenile Snowy Egrets have a bit of a nest spat. There were lots of nesting Snowy Egrets and Black Crowned Night Herons in the trees in Morro Bay.
California Ground Squirrels - 6/24/13
A pair of California Ground Squirrels size each other up before squaring off.
Bunny Wabbit - 6/23/13
A little bunny rabbit hopped across the trail as I made my way back to my car.
Wrentit - 6/23/13
I have often heard Wrentits calling before, but this is the first time I have gotten a picture of one :)
Rufous Hummingbird - 6/23/13
There were lots of hummingbirds on the Valencia Peak trail, like this Rufous Hummingbird.
Valencia Peak Hike - 6/23/13
Trail map. Next time I hike this, I am gonna try some more of the many trails in the area.
Valencia Peak Hike - 6/23/13
Lots of wildflowers were blooming along the trail, which made for a lot of bird activity - especially humming birds.
Valencia Peak Hike - 6/23/13
Sturdy hiking boots with good tread are a must for the trail, as it is very rocky in spots. Trekking poles might be a good idea too, especially on the descent.
Valencia Peak Hike - 6/23/13
The little box on the ground has journals and pens for hikers to sign in.
Valencia Peak Hike - 6/23/13
It's 2 miles and an elevation change of over 1200 feet to the peak. It was a foggy day, so the views weren't so great, but it was worth it :)

Valencia Peak hike - 6/23/13
This isn't a view of the top. You actually have to ascend this hill before you get to the peak. False hopes - lol.
Valencia Peak hike - 6/23/13
A pretty rocky section of the trail. It was fairly foggy, so I didn't get too many good pictures. Maybe next time ;)
Valencia Peak hike - 6/23/13
2 miles to the top, and an elevation gain of around 1250 ft, the trail is rated moderately strenuous. It starts off easy enough, but around the middle part, it gets pretty steep and rocky. I forgot my hiking stick in the trunk of my car, so going back down was pretty tough at times. My feet and legs are pretty mad at me right now - lol. A year ago, I could never have made this hike. I feel pretty darned good about myself right now :)

Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest - 5/25/13
My favorite tree on The Discovery Trail - in black and white.
Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest - 5/25/13
A view from The Discovery Trail. Definitely one of the coolest looking trees on the trail.
Sunset in the White Mountains - 5/26/13
I got back from my day trip just in time to catch a beautiful sunset from the White Mountains.
Silver Lake - 5/26/13
A black and white rendering of the aspen trees at Silver Lake. You can see that people have carved their names into the trees, something I call "treefffiti."
Silver Lake - 5/26/13
I just love these aspen trees at Silver Lake. They are especially pretty in the fall.
Manzanar National Historic Site - 5/27/13
I made a quick stop to the Manzanar National Historic Site on the way home.
