Centennial Stump - in 1875, two brothers decided they could make some money by displaying a giant sequoia at America's Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. It took 9 days to cut down the tree. A 16 foot portion was cut off and split into sections for reassembly. Because of the tree's enormous size and the obvious reassembly lines, the display was labeled a hoax. This stump also became known as the "School Stump" because wives and children from nearby logging camps would hold Sunday School on it.
